Alex Singleton Makes Triumphant Return Following Testicular Cancer Surgery
Denver Broncos linebacker and defensive captain Alex Singleton returned to the field on November 30th, playing in his first game following his testicular cancer diagnosis and surgery on November 7th.
Singleton’s routine drug test on November 3rd flagged unusually high HcG levels, prompting him to seek immediate medical care. An ultrasound that same day confirmed the diagnosis. Following a Thursday night win against the Raiders, Singleton underwent an orchiectomy to remove the affected testicle on Friday, November 7th.
He was on the sidelines for the November 16th game against the Kansas City Chiefs, but even while recovering, Singleton continued to lead the Broncos’ defense as team captain. Just 19 days after his surgery, he returned to practice and played against the Washington Commanders just 23 days post-op. His astonishing recovery and dedication to his team have earned the admiration of fans and fellow players alike. Broncos defensive tackle Malcolm Roach said, “It’s crazy. I told him: They’re going to write a book on it and it’s going to be a best seller.”
Singleton made one of the night’s standout defensive plays, knocking the ball free from Washington tight end Zach Ertz on what would have been a crucial 3rd-and-21 conversion, potentially putting the Commanders in scoring position in the final minutes of a three-point game.
He also represented the Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation through the My Cause, My Cleats program at Sunday night’s game. Singleton has previously honored the Special Olympics through the same program, in recognition of his sister, Ashley Singleton. Beyond his cleats, he uses his platform to emphasize the importance of early detection and seeking medical care, highlighting his positive prognosis as a testament to timely intervention.
The Broncos went on to beat the Commanders 27-26 in overtime, extending their winning streak to 10-2 and moving closer to their first AFC West title since 2015. Singleton’s skill and leadership as linebacker and defensive captain were on full display, from key defensive stops to his standout strip of Zach Ertz. His remarkable recovery serves as an inspiring reminder of resilience both on and off the field.
